These docs describe the reference manufacturing API at sinter.systems. A sinter.ac subscription covers the project-planning workspace; manufacturing API access is separate.

Manufacturability

Upload a model to check its geometry and get a price and ship date in the same workflow. No purchase is required to read the analysis. REST and MCP return the same findings.

Using findings on your quote

Select a listed feature to highlight its surface on the model. Rotate the preview to inspect it. Thin detail is a warning only: the quote can still be paid, and the detail prints as close to the model as the nozzle allows. If it affects fit, strength or function, upload a revision with it thickened. Mesh repair and other holds still need Sinter review before payment.

Get the analysis through the API

  1. Upload through POST /v1/quotes or MCP create_quote.
  2. Poll GET /v1/quotes/{quote_id} or MCP get_quote every 5–10 seconds while received or processing.
  3. Read manufacturability and flags together with status, tier and ship_date_pending. Show findings to the user before a purchase.

Analysis and coverage

manufacturability returns analysis_id, version, status, checked, not_assessed, review_required and findings. A changed file or manufacturing configuration can change the analysis ID. Read the updated quote after every edit.

screened means the listed checks ran; it is not a certification. Older quotes can return not_assessed. screening_allows_purchasedescribes only this screening decision: quote expiry, capacity, payment and other checkout requirements still apply. A successful slice does not prove that all features survive.

visualization.mesh_url provides the model relative to the API origin. Agents can overlay surface_triangles_mm on that mesh in the uploaded millimetre coordinate frame, using the same surface highlights as the quote page. Clients without a 3D viewer should show review_url so the customer can inspect the highlighted part.

Findings

Each finding has code, level, message and features. New findings may also include action, method, rule, requires_review, feature_count and status. A block identifies a problem preventing manufacture as uploaded. A warningmay accompany a payable quote or an engineering estimate; use the quote status to decide the next step.

{
  "flags": [{
    "code": "mesh_review",
    "level": "warning",
    "message": "Needs mesh repair.",
    "features": [{"kind": "hole", "centroid_mm": [12, 4, 8], "size_mm": 3.2}]
  }]
}

Feature locations use the uploaded file’s coordinate frame, in millimetres. Features may be empty; where available, they identify holes or sampled thin regions so an agent or CAD tool can point to the affected region. Thin regions report thickness_mm (the median sampled thickness), minimum_sampled_thickness_mm, area_mm2 and samples. For surface highlighting, surface_triangles_mm contains up to 128 sampled mesh faces per region; surface_triangle_count gives the uncapped count. Highlighted faces contain measurements, not an exact defect boundary. Locations and areas are approximate; small unsampled features can be missed. At most 25 regions per finding are returned; feature_count gives the detected total.

CodeLevelMeaning and next step
unreadableblockThe file cannot be read. Export it again in an accepted format.
too_smallblockThe largest dimension is below 2 mm. Check the units or revise the model.
no_thicknessblockThe model is a flat surface without a solid body. Export a solid.
too_largeblockThe part exceeds the size that can be handled as uploaded. Revise it or contact Sinter. Some oversized parts can instead enter engineering review.
open_surfaceblockThe model is not a closed solid. Close the reported holes in CAD and upload again.
mesh_reviewwarningThe mesh needs engineer review and repair. Treat the price as an estimate until Sinter issues a quote.
thin_feature_reviewwarningSampled regions are narrower than the selected nozzle. That detail may print thinner, distorted or not at all. The quote can still be paid; upload a thickened revision only if the detail is critical.
mesh_repairedwarningThe mesh was automatically repaired. Review the model preview and reported changes.

Engineering review

needs_review means Sinter must review the part before payment. engineering is an estimate: send a draft request when the user asks, then wait for an issued quote. A quoted part with ship_date_pending: true still needs plan approval before its date is confirmed. Reviews are completed the same business day for requests sent by 6 PM Pacific, otherwise the next business day.

Custom materials, size, complexity and production planning can require review even when flags is empty. Statuses and next steps.

Agent behavior

Show measured findings and their locations. Ask about critical dimensions and intended use when relevant. Do not invent minimum dimensions, claim a full DFM pass, or silently waive review. A proposed material, geometry or print-setting change needs an updated analysis. Sinter records who reviewed a hold and why; the original findings remain visible with a reviewed status.

What the checks cover

These findings cover file readability, overall size, solid geometry, mesh repair and sampled near-parallel thin regions. The thin-region rule uses the median of at least 12 samples, filters isolated samples and tapering edges while retaining sustained thin walls and widespread thin geometry, excludes thickness along the known build axis, and compares remaining geometry with the selected nozzle. Supported fine detail creates no warning. This is a conservative screen, not a validated minimum wall thickness or a prediction of failure. Thin-region sampling is not run on meshes whose closed-solid geometry or face orientation cannot be trusted. They are not a complete design qualification: an empty findings list does not certify strength, fit, tolerances or suitability for an application. Tell Sinter about critical dimensions and intended use when requesting engineering review. Read the service specification.
